GET TO HALF

School Program

Let’s make 2011-2012 the Greenest School Year Yet!

Schools are leading the way in environmental initiatives, providing creative learning environments that empower our youth to make positive efforts to Get to Half and reduce their waste.

Our Get to Half at School program promotes environmental stewardship within Newfoundland and Labrador’s school system, focusing on waste reduction as a means of protecting our environment. We provide tools and resources to help bring these practices in to the classroom.

Our school program expands each year, and the successes we realize are only achieved because of teachers and administrators like you – environmental champions who have chosen to take action. We thank you for your leadership and for helping MMSB to educate and motivate the youth of our province to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle their way to a greener future.

In 2010-2011, MMSB delivered 269 presentations to 45 schools across Newfoundland and Labrador, impacting more than 5,700 Students. This year we’re planning to travel to areas of the island we’ve never reached – to visit new schools and meet more of our province’s youth!

We would also like to congratulate all 273 schools that participated in the School Recycling Program this past year that collectively recycled and diverted more than 13.9 million beverage containers from provincial landfills. In 2010-2011, schools raised more than $14.5 million in recycling refunds and matching grants provided by MMSB through beverage container recycling. Schools have reinvested these funds in a wide variety of environmental and educational initiatives.
