RECYCLING PROGRAMS
Program Overview
On April 1, 2002, government regulations for the Used Tire Recycling Program placed a ban on the disposal of used tires in municipal waste disposal sites in Newfoundland and Labrador and provided residents with an environmentally safe way to dispose of used passenger and light truck tires.
ConsumersConsumers can leave their used tires, at no cost, with a tire retailer upon the purchase of new tires. However, they can also be returned to a tire retailer at a later date in manageable quantities during the retailer's normal business hours.
Used tires must be in whole form, free of mud or debris, and must have their rims removed prior to disposal at a retailer.
Please note that used tires are NOT ACCEPTED at any location other than a tire retail outlet or as otherwise designated by MMSB.
Tire RetailersRetailers must pay a levy of $3 on new tires with a rim diameter of 17 inches or less, and $9 on new tires with a rim diameter greater than 17 inches and equal to or less than 24.5 inches.
Retailers may arrange for a pick-up of used tires returned by consumers by calling MMSB at 1-800-901-6672.
There are no levies applied to ATV, OTR, forklift or other industrial tires and consequently these tires are not collected under the Used Tire Recycling Program by MMSB.
Consumers and retailers interested in disposing of these types of tires should contact their municipal waste disposal site for appropriate direction.
